Portsmouth Cup
Saturday 10th October 2009

After a poor result and performance last week, the boys knew that we had to set things right with an epic win. Tom Lloyd, coach, made a number of changes to the squad, giving other players a chance to show what they can do. The game started quickly, with James Potton hitting the crossbar within the first 5 minutes. Jordan greaves opened the score line with a fine finish with his left foot beating the keeper to his left side. This got the game rolling with the boys challenging an pressuring all over the pitch, given the opposition no time on the ball. With another precision through-ball by James Potton, he put through Jordan greaves to score with a neat finish.

Even though Portsmouth were 2-0 up they still pushed the opponent onto the back foot. Coxy and Jordan let nothing come through the middle of midfield, helping the defence. After some fantastic build up play, Matt was played in after between the defenders to finish superbly on his debut. Lee Moyce was busy up top making numerous runs off his strike partner Matt, creating a lot of space for them both. He was reward with a goal with 30 minutes gone putting the ball confidently past the keepers right side. Unit were always on the back foot and it didn’t help that the midfield and defence were blocking everything they tried with ease. Maxy Gray was forced off injured after a strong challenge. This gave Mike a chance to come on for his debut and a chance to show what he can do. The ref called it for half time and after a strong first 45, only more was to come from Portsmouth.

The 2nd half kicked off with only 1 change form the team which saw the injured Potton coming off for another debutant Dan. Unit had a half chance but it went wide – a wake up call for the Pompey lads. Stass who made the step up from last week performed strongly and you could see the confidence he had when passing the ball out from the back and collecting the oppenents’ crosses. Within 10 minutes Pompey broke down the Unit defence again. Coxy picked the ball up from midfield and pushed through and chipped the ball into the path of Lee Moyce who finished sharply and confidently, making the score 5-0. Within minutes, Matt scored again with a neat finish from a great pass in from Mike. Josh Warren was creating chances and becoming a great threat down the left side, he was rewarded with a goal on 72 minutes. Maltby was up and down the right side all game and had a number of chances. He burst forward, and with a fantastic ball found Jordan Greaves who rounded off his hat-trick. After a great debut performance by Matt, he was taken off on the 75th minute for Torben to show what he can do. Torben straight from the start was involved in the game, and within minutes of being on scored. Dan provided the assist with a great cross making it 10-0. Duffy and Joe were solid all game and when Unit attacked they delt with it with quality.

Even though Portsmouth were winning 10-0, they still pushed until the end of the game and within minutes of the full-time whistle, Mike scored with a good finish making it 11-0. Portsmouth were strong all game and performed with great quality all over the pitch.

Man of the Match: Coxy
